In its purest form, the term “Biotechnology” refers to the use of living organisms or their products to modify human health and the human environment. Biotechnology, a relatively infant discipline is working hard for improving the living standards of people all over the world. Even if the discipline has been integrated its application is in almost all disciplines its major focus areas are four:-
- Medical biotechnology
- Industrial biotechnology
- Agricultural biotechnology
- Environmental biotechnology
Currently, the institute has a harmonized four year B.Sc. curriculum used to train general biotechnologists who are able to work in four of the above categories at different public and private sectors. At the post graduate level the Institute has a curriculum that enables students to specialize in the four different fields of study as per their interests. Among the four fields of study the Institute has 1st batch in medical biotechnology, 2nd batch in medical and industrial biotechnology and 1st batch in all four of the departments. The Institute also has PHD program in four fields of study and two batches are enrolled in all of the fields. The Admission criteria is the criteria referred by the University registrar and Ministry of Education. However, M.Sc. students are supposed to score at least 50% in the entrance test. The PhD students have to pass the entrance exam and present and defend their synopsis successfully in from of the board of examiners.
