Director’s message
In its purest form, the term “Biotechnology” refers to the use of living organisms or their products to modify human health and the human environment. Biotechnology, a relatively infant discipline is working hard for improving the living standards of people all over the world. Even if the discipline has been integrated its application in almost all disciplines its major focus areas are four:-
- Medical biotechnology
- Industrial biotechnology
- Agricultural biotechnology
- Environmental biotechnology
Currently, the institute has a harmonized four year B.Sc. curriculum used to train general biotechnologists who are able to work in four of the above categories at different public and private sectors. At the postgraduate level the Institute has a curriculum that enables students to specialize in the four different fields of study as per their interests. Among the four fields of study the Institute has 1st batch in medical biotechnology, 2nd batch in medical and industrial biotechnology and all the necessary preparations have been completed to admit students in the other three fields of studies too.
Purpose statement
The University of Gondar is expected to play a vital role in the socio-economic development of the country. Hence, Biotechnology is directed towards producing qualified, competent and responsible professionals in the field of biotechnology and is devoted wholly to achieve excellence in the promotion of biotechnology in the country. The Institute shall also provide services in the areas of research, popularization of biotechnology, creation of centers of excellence, scientific and technological empowerment of human resource and enhance the knowledge base. Moreover, it is dedicated to provide consultancy services to the public and private institutions engaged in biotechnology and related businesses.
